Ever since he refused to play for the Baltimore Colts after they drafted him in 1983, John Elway has been on my S List. When I voiced these sentiments recently to my buddy Charlie Harless he said to me “J. it’s been 30 years, you need to get over it.” Ah, but there are just some things in life you never quite get over including important things like someone not wanting to play for your favorite football team.
Thru the years then I always rooted against Elway and enjoyed the fact that he got a rep for not being able to win the big one. Elway and the Broncos lost 3 Super Bowls including the one where Doug Williams and the Redskins beat the pulp out of them 42-10 (click here.) As the Broncos trudged off the field following that loss and the cameras showed Elway very dejected, I remember rejoicing “Karma got you, horse face.” Of course Elway would eventually win not one but two Super Bowls so I guess karma has a way of evening things out.

So I’m good with Elway being in the Top 5 on my S List. But then just the other day I saw this video (below) of Elway discussing his boss Pat Bowlen retiring . Bowen is stepping down because he has Alzheimer’s. Maybe it’s because I fear that I too am looking down the barrel of this disease, but Elway’s response was kind of moving.
After 30 plus years of cringing and cussing whenever I hear the name John Elway, I can finally say that I’m over it. That karma’s a bitch isn’t it?
