Joe Road Trip Crew and Two Jerseys

In keeping with my “Two Theme” of the week here, I now have two 1950-era baseball jerseys on display in Buzzy’s Country Store.  (The first jersey belonged to my cousin J. Frank Raley and was recently given to me by John Cook (click here.))

At the Joe Stone Road Trip party last Friday, Joe presented me with another jersey, this time one that belonged to Jimmy Duke.  Jimmy wore it when he played for Tall Timbers’ basrball team.   As you can tell from his obit (click here) Jimmy was quite a character.  Here is an excerpt from the obit:

“He also wrote Duke’s Corner, a column that ran in The Enterprise from 1986 through 1988.
He was well known in various local “watering holes.” An avid Washington Redskins fan, lottery player and Buck Snort Extraordinaire #452, he could be counted on to liven things up with his presence. He enjoyed playing pitch and poker, and he read The Washington Post daily from front to back, sharing sections and articles as he deemed appropriate with family and friends.”

Jimmy was in Buzzy’s Country Store a few years back and asked me about a Bucksnort hat that he had given Buzzy.  The hat was not on display and I couldn’t find it anywhere in the Buzzy collection.  Jimmy gave me a hard time about not having the hat and I was at a loss for explanations as to what had become of it.

Then, one day several weeks later, while moving a display rack out to paint it, I found the Bucksnort hat that had slipped down behind the case.  I promptly put it up to show Jimmy next time he rolled into the Store.  Unfortunately, he passed away and I never got a chance to show him that his Bucksnort hat hangs proudly in Buzzy’s,  Now, his Bucksnort hat and his jersey are here.
