Shorty, John, Lynne and Roger

In addition to seeing Linda Carlson Saturday morning, talking to her about the Larkin desk only to have someone comment on the desk an hour later in the Store (my post from the other day) I had a couple other “coincidental” visitors to Buzzy’s Country Store that same day.

I was doing some spring cleaning outside the Store when I came across this old Shorty Miller doormat. (Shorty used to work at NAS Pax for my Aunt Grace Ridgell who sold him property adjacent to her where he lived for a number of years.  How Buzzy ended up with his doormat I don’t know.)  When I saw the doormat I thought of John Yearick.

John recently purchased the Capper property in St. Jerome’s Neck and has been in Buzzy’s several times.  One day when visiting the Store, John saw the Shorty Miller doormat and told me that Shorty had been a good friend and a mentor of sorts to his father when he first moved to the County.  John had nothing but good things to say about Shorty.

When I saw the Shorty doormat Saturday, I thought about John and wondered how he was doing.  My son Brady has been doing some carpentry work for him, but he hadn’t been in the Store for awhile.  You can imagine my surprise when he then strolled into the Store 5 minutes later.   (The joke I always tell dudes who drop in like this goes “I just thought about you and here you show up.  Why can’t I do that with beautiful women?”)

As John and I talked, I asked if he had had any plumbing problems from the freezes this past winter.  John said no but that he had been experiencing some water pressure problems that thankfully Roger Powell had been able to correct without having to drill a new well.  (Problem had something to do with filters on the water supply lines.)  As John and I continued talking, guess who then walked into Buzzy’s a few minutes later?

I took Lynne and Roger Powell’s wedding pictures 36 years ago.  When I installed the geothermal unit at my house a couple of years ago, Roger drilled the wells for it and we caught up after all these years.  Roger has been in Buzzy’s several times since then, but this past Saturday he and Lynne were out riding around sightseeing with some of their friends from out of town and had been down to Pt. Lookout.  John told Roger that we had just been talking about him as everyone grabbed a drink and kicked back.

I’m very thankful that Buzzy’s remains a place where folks can visit, relax, kick back and catch up.  I don’t take it for granted that these are the good old days.

I’ve played this video for you before and it’s not bad even if it makes the mistake of emphasizing the products and goods in the old country stores.  We all know that the best thing about a country store is the people who drop by to visit, relax and catch up.
