On this day in history President Abe Lincoln was shot while attending a play at Ford’s Theater in 1865.
Brings up a question to consider – how would things have been different had Lincoln simply acquiesced and allowed the 11 southern states to secede when thy wanted to do so? Had Abe simply said “Sayonora” to them and as in any good divorce wished them well and FU, how would things have panned out?
One very immediate consequence would have been the saving of 620,000 lives that were lost in the fighting of the Civil War. (Think about this, over 1. 2 million Americans have died in all of our wars combined, meaning that approximately half of our losses were incurred during the four years of a Civil War fighting amongst ourselves (click here.)
However, had Abe just said “ok”, several factors would have negatively impacted the Confederate States of America (CSA) and their abilities to govern effectively (click here).
But one can only wonder how things would have been very different today if the CSA was alive and well and we were the two no-so-United-States of America (click here.) Check out this interview with someone who even wrote a book about it (click here.)
Then again, maybe Abe was conflicted about the split as in Lindsey’s song to Stevie:
