A habit that stems from my bachelor, tomcat days, I always take note of a lady’s ring finger to see what is or isn’t there ring-wise. So when the bank teller took my deposit, I noticed the nail polish on her left ring fingernail was painted black while all her other nails were painted a bright green. As she returned my receipt I asked her if it meant anything.
She blushed a bit, laughed and stuttered something that I didn’t quite get as a coworker behind the counter working the drive thru window interjected something that I didn’t get either. Not wanting to cause her any discomfort, I let it be and left. (This is a great coping skill that I’ve mastered thru the years – when something does not quite make sense, let it be and just leave.)
Driving down the road though, I got to thinking about her reaction and figured I may have stumbled onto something in a Ridge boy kind of way. So, once at the Store I cranked up the ole Google machine to see what was up with the black nail polish on the ring finger.
Only found a million or so other inquiries and hits on the same question. Samples follow:
But guess what? Having spent way more time than I should have reading the various responses and explanations as to what the ring-finger-black-polish-thing is all about, I still don’t know. You can check it too if you want to try and do so, but be forewarned – you won’t end up with any conclusive answer(s) either (click here for one set of answers.)
Proves once again I guess that some mysteries are better off left unsolved. Then again, next time I’m back in the bank I may just have to ask my teller lady what’s her story. Oh second thought, maybe it’s better to let the black nails lie, perhaps even literally!
