As we roll on to the end of June, that means it is time for the Supreme Court to hand down their decisions. I heard some politico on the radio the other day predict that the same sex marriage case would be approved but that the Obama care one would not. If true, then that means that a couple thousand gay folks will benefit from the Court’s marriage decision while several million folks who have health care will see their lives negatively impacted. Makes a lot of sense right?
Either way the Court decides, these two cases will be biggies, or landmark cases, for years to come. I also heard the politico on the radio state that the Supreme Court is the only branch of government that explains its decisions in writing. Never thought about that but it makes sense to do so doesn’t it? Maybe our Congressional folks and our President ought to be forced to explain their decisions in writing too.
All of which leads me to this not-so-trick-quiz, if you had to name any 3 Supreme Court decisions could you do so? (Here’s another one for you – how many of the nine Supreme Court Justices can you name (click here.)
RE: landmark cases, most folks can come up with Roe v Wade but are hard pressed to state any others. They’ll usually say something about “Wasn’t Dred Scott in there somewhere?” (For reference purposes, here’s a good summary of landmark decisions by the Court (click here.) Also I discussed another famous one, Wickard vs. Filburn, that dealt with agricultural issues and subsidies here on the Buzzyblog awhile back (click here.)
But speaking of Supremes who got it right, these ladies Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard were pretty good. Who says I can’t name 3 of the Supremes?
