Yesterday was Berta’s birthday, so belated birthday wishes to her!
Whenever I look at some of Buzzy’s Country Store pictures from back in the day, such as Berta’s above, I always scan the backgrounds to see what all he had on the shelves and what was in that area of the store. This particular vantage point shows the corner where today the Coke case sits to the left as you come in the front door. As seen here, Buzzy used to have a produce case in that area. It’s seen better here in this classic Polock Napping photo:
Also, that corner was the Store’s pharmaceutical department. (I still have some necessities stocked there today and when tourists ask for Tylenol I always tell them “The end of Aisle One.” It’s always fun to see who does and does not react to that joke.) Notice how the shelves are built closer together here as they were sized to accommodate pill bottles, cough syrup, band aids, jars of Vaseline etc. Also, seen are several decanters on the upper shelf which were not for sale. These came from when Buzzy was a liquor salesman and he began colleting them and had them on display throughout the Store. Of course on the very top shelf, Buzzy had the larger items such as coolers, wash tubs and gas cans many of which are still there today collecting dust.
Funny how that photo of Berta took me down memory lane.
But speaking of drugs and medicine, this is a good excuse to show you this 1988 Bon Jovi video with a cameo from none other than Sam Kinison:
