Speaking of Coolidge (previous post) here’s a sad story that went down during his presidency – his son Calvin Jr. died from a sepsis infection he picked up in the hospital after developing a blister on his foot.
Made me think of our St. Mary’s Youth Memorial that I pass by twice a day on my trips to and from Buzzy’s Country Store. Some evenings while stuck in the traffic there at Great Mills, I have had lots of time to view the Memorial from the road. So the other morning I stopped in and checked it out. First off I was unaware of the history behind the statue and grotto:
As described on this plaque in front of the grotto the statue came from St. Mary’s Academy.
Adjacent each side of the grotto are granite monuments containing the names of deceased youth. Here are photos of a couple of the monuments leading off with the name of Thomas Anthony Tippett for whom his parents started the memorial:
Behind the grotto is a pavilion and a gazebo:
Also, found this info on the Memorial thanks to the Google machine (click here.) Should you decide to drop by the Youth Memorial, here’s a little warning for you – you’re going to see some names of young people that you once knew and it’s going to make you very sad. Also, next time you’re sitting in traffic on Rt. 5 there in Great Mills you’ll be thinking about some other things than how bad the traffic is.
