Speaking of Elvis Costello (previous post) in his book he described bringing Van Morrison to meet Chet Baker. Van then decided to do a song with Chet and selected Send in the Clowns. Turns out that Chet hated that song. This video shows that session in rehearsal. Van split before that evening’s show and never did do the number on stage with Chet.
I always sort of liked the song because I remember an NFL video on Johnny Unitas set to it. Video showed clips of Johnny being sacked or walking off the field with his head hung low as the lyrics “Losing my timing this late in my career” were sang. Then Joe Namath was shown to “There ought to be clowns. Send in the clowns.” (Note: I spent more time than I should have looking for that particular NFL video. If any of you have more luck locating it, please let me know.)
