Blue Monday

While in Budapest, I checked out the Shoes on the Danube memorial and in a way wish I hadn’t.  It was a very sobering and depressing sight once I learned of its reason for being there.

In 1944 and 45 Budapest Jews were taken to the river where they were lined up and shot.  Because shoes were valuable commodities at the time, they were forced to remove them before being executed and falling into the water.

In 2005 a Hungarian sculptor came up with the idea of fashioning 60 pairs of bronze shoes in a row along the Danube. Each pair of shoes in the memorial was modeled after an original 1940’s pair.

Somewhere in my reading about the memorial I found a reference to the following video.  Warning – it’s as equally shocking and depressing as is the memorial itself:

Can’t leave you down so how’s about something from the Fat Man who passed last month at the young age of 89.
