Don’t Talk Politics

There is a scene in the book News of the World (previous post) where an argument over politics turns into a full scale brawl.    Although the narrator reading the news to his listeners purposely tries to avoid mention of local politics and focus instead on events going on in other parts of the World, the argument and brawl break out.  The narrator is then forced to curtail his reading.

As I read the description of the scene, it made me think “Wow, not much has changed has it?”  Seems that nowadays no political discussion or conversation can be had without it turning into an argument or a name calling session.  In Buzzy’s Country Store, where the tide runs very Red, I no longer even try to join in any political conversations knowing that it is a complete waste of my time to do so.   Like Buzzy used to do, I have learned to tune out the things that I don’t really care to hear about.  Also like Buzzy used to do when the shit gets really deep, I simply turn the music up a little louder.

Thus, when Bill Maher came up with his new rule about not talking politics, I laughed along with him but knew that his rule was not so new in my Buzzy world.
