Twofer Tuesday – Gimme a Drink

Usually “Twofer Tuesday” Buzzyblog has two music videos for you but with this week being the anniversary of Prohibition taking effect (Jan 17, 1920) today let’s look at two articles on the subject.

The first article provides a good historical review of how alcohol came to be such an important part in our American identity (click here.)  If for no other reason, look the article over just to read the classic line “Prohibition is incontrovertible proof that you don’t have to be drunk to come up with really, really bad ideas.”

The second article discusses a leading lady in the Temperance Movement – Carrie Nation:

Gives New Meaning to “Old Battle Ax”

I wonder if Jimmy Buffet had heard of Carrie when he wrote “Some people say a woman’s to blame…”

Fortunately, Prohibition was repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933.  It was originally enacted via the 18th Amendment and remains the only amendment to our Constitution that ever took away a right.  Think about it.

Time for a tune that I’ve played for you before but seems more than appropriate for today’s sad tale of no drinking.
