April Fees

The month of April features its Federal and State tax day on the 15th. This of course impacts everyone.

However, for business owners, in addition to having to deal with income taxes, Maryland also wants their LLC fees @ $300 per.  (When I bought the Store, I set up two LLC’s one for the Store and one for the apartment rentals. The fees at the time were $150 per LLC but a year after I set the two LLC’s up, that fee doubled to $300 each.)

On top of those annual tax requirements, St. Mary’s County Liquor Board requires that liquor licenses be renewed by the end of April. The amount of the liquor license fee depends on the type of liquor license that a business holds.  For example, Buzzy’s Country Store has what they call an “On-off license” which means that folks can drink on premise and/or buy it to go. The on-off Class D license costs $650 annually.  It used to be the most expensive license until the hotel folks got assessed with their Class B $1,000 license. As you can see there are many different types of licenses and fees for selling alcohol.  For a breakdown on the different Classes of Liquor Licenses click here and scroll down.

I mention all of this because I am on my way to Leonardtown today to pick up my license.  And as much as I hate doing so, I am always relieved and feel better after I have picked up my new license.  As for the expense, I mentally write it off as a cost of doing business.
And speaking of drinking matters and writing things off, here is a pretty good drinking song/video for you.  (My thanks for the referral from a good friend.)
