Vic, Shady Side and Mohan

Did a little road trip the other day with my buddy Robby to visit Vic Carbone in Shady Side.  It was a good day as we bopped around Shady Side, downtown Deale, and Snug Harbor with Vic acting as our tour guide.

We ate lunch at the Happy Harbor Restaurant where of course Robby not only knew the bar tender but also received a sweet little kiss, hug and round of drinks from her.  (Vic had suggested a couple of other places we could have patronized for lunch, but I now see why Robbie preferred the Happy Harbor.)

Following lunch, Vic asked if I would like to visit a store similar to Buzzy’s Country Store and I said “Sure.”  As we pulled into Renno’s Super Market, the owner, Mr. Mohan Grover, was walking out the door. He greeted us as if he knew that we were about to arrive.  Here is my photo of Vic and Mohan in front of the store:

Vic had given us some background info on Mohan and his store.  Once I was back home and did some internetting, I came across the following  excerpt from a 2001 Baltimore Sun article about Mohan and his store:

Vic explained how years back Shady Side residents fought off a Safeway from setting up shop in their area.  He noted how Mohan was one of the leaders in the Safeway fight.   This again from the Baltimore Sun article cited above:

Found this nice article that tells you more about Shady Side and its residents (click here.)

The Good Deale Bluegrass Band began in a music shop named Good Deale.  (I’ll leave it to you to figure out where it was located (click here.)
