S-Day

Because you will get your fill of D-Day-related stories today, I will take the Buzzyblog abit south from the Normandy beaches to Alsace, France and discuss S-Day with you. S as in storks.

Storks are a BFD in that area of France.  Here is a good article summing up reasons how and why that is so  (click here.)  (Note that delivery of babies is only a small part of the explanation.)

During our time in Alsace just about every place we visited featured storks and their nests on chimney tops throughout their towns.  The tour guides would talk up the sightings of storks in their nests.  As we rode past these sightings, folks on the bus would ooh and ah and begin taking photos.

The stork story is very similar to our ospreys.  For instance, they both migrate south for several thousands of miles.  Storks go to Africa; our ospreys go to South America.  They both return to the same nests each year.

However, seems that the storks have figured out that all that migrating is unnecessary.

Wonder if any of the migrating storks ever hum this tune on their way to Africa:
