Weather and Bugs

The general consensus in Buzzy’s Country Store among my cognoscenti is that while all of this nice midwinter weather is nice, we do need a really good cold spell to kill off all the bugs.  The conversations involve testimonials of various sightings of stink bugs and flies and other insects that one does  not usually see at this time of year.

Like a lot of the other conversations overheard in Buzzy’s, I generally stay out of it.  I know that any mention of this being a global warming related issue, will then set the conversations off in a completely political rant along the lines “something-made-up-by-you-dumb-ass-liberals.”   Thus, I keep my ammo dry and merely comment along the lines  “I’ll trade some bugs for no cold, no snow, no ice any day.”

Another conversation I hear repeated in Buzzy’s involves people being affected by tick bites such that they become allergic to meat.  (My Mom and buddy Greg Madjeski are folks who can no longer eat meat because of this allergic reaction caused by a Lone Star tick bite.)  It is dubbed the alpha-gal allergy (click here.)   Seems like more and more folks are being diagnosed with this allergy (click here.)   Because the lone star tick feeds on deer, the Buzzy solution to this problem is to kill all the deer.  Too bad that solving global warming doesn’t have  a similar simple solution.
