Jason Babcock’s 2013 article (below) clarified something I’ve thought about as I travel over Rt. 489 aka Park Hall Road. About mid-way thru 489 there is a side road named Courtneyville. I took these photos of it the other day.
Jason’s article tells how Courtney Road, its original name, was once part of the Mattapany Path that connected St. Mary’s City with Cedar Point.

Here is the marker at St. Mary’s City that Jason referenced. (As many times that I have driven by it, I never once stopped to read it. In fact, as I thought about doing a post on this I had to actually double check to see if the marker is/was still there. It is.)

Mattapany Road eventually became what we know it as today either a connecting road between Routes 5 and 235 or as a way for the college kids to get to St. James Deli.
However, because Mattapany originally included Courtneyville, maybe we should now call Courtneyville the path not taken. OK, that was a joke. A lame one but I’ll redeem myself with this Beatles “road” song. Only problem I have with this tune is the followup line “No one will be watching us.” Hey guys, you’re doing it in the road – EVERYBODY will be watching you! Best comment on this song follows:
