Note: in anticipating today’s date, I wrote the following Buzzyblog post several weeks ago. I’m not usually that far forward thinking but at the time it seemed like a good idea because I figured that the NCAA Tournament would now be in full swing. Also, when I wrote this, I was in the planning stages of going on a cruise to the south Caribbean. I figured I would write this post, include a comment or two on an upcoming event at St. Mary’s College and then schedule it to appear today.
Well, not only was the NCAA Tournament cancelled but so too was my cruise AND the SMC event. What’s that old saying “Man plans and God laughs”? Here anyway is what I had planned to say.

On this date in 2002 I bought a new car. It was and remains a memorable day to me for two reasons. One, this photo was taken commemorating the event so I can’t forget it.
And two, Maryland men’s basketball team beat Tubby’s Kentucky Wildcats later that night. Maryland would then go onto to win the National Title that year. Good recap here (click here.)
When my buddy Rich Brewer asked me if I wanted a ticket to hear former Duke star Jay Williams speak at St. Mary’s College this coming Thursday night I had to beg off. I explained to Rich that I still haven’t gotten over the 2001 Final Four when the refs gave Duke the win over Maryland as discussed here:

All of which leads me to conclude that buying a new car may or may not have anything to do with your team winning; but buying a ref or two will definitely get you in the win column. I know, you are thinking that I am just being a bad sport about this but other folks alot smarter than me have made the same case (click here.)
But not to dwell on the negative, I’ll leave you with here a more uplifting memory:
P.S. That’s Jay Williams crying at the 4:56 mark after Indiana had eliminated Duke. Payback’s a bitch isn’t it?
