I could hear every word said by the older couple who sat behind Brady and me at Friday nights’ Mariners-O’s game. Obviously big Mariners’ fans, they made several observations throughout the game that told me that they knew their players, knew the game and were true fans of their team.
But my overall regard for the couple went south when three Orioles converged on a lazy fly ball down the left field line and allowed it to drop among them for a base hit. In a voice loud enough to make sure that I overheard, the guy said to his wife “And this is supposed to be the best team in baseball?!” “I know!” said the wife.
I was unhappy to begin with that the Orioles had blown such an easy play which should have been an out. But when Grandpa made his sarcastic comment, it pissed me off even more. It was all I could do to not turn around and tell him “The Orioles have won 71 games this year and are leading their division. You bozos are in 3rd place in your division fighting for a wild card spot. Up yours!”
However, the fact that their team at that moment held a six run lead over my team, I figured I’d better keep my ammo dry and mouth shut. (For the record – the Mariners had won seven games in a row prior to Friday’s game hosting the Orioles and have been the best team in baseball since the All Star break. So, I couldn’t really break bad on the two of them too much.)
All that said though, I thought about their smug asses last night right after the Orioles won 5-3 for the second extra inning win over the Mariners. (Saturday night it was 1-0 win for the O’s that ended the Mariners’ consecutive game win streak.) Currently, the Mariners are the 9th best team in baseball and stand 1.5 games behind a playoff spot (click here.)
So today, as Chuck would say “Ain’t the beer cold.” Or, to lay some French on you “la vengeance se mange très bien froide” i.e. revenge is very good eaten cold. (Think I like Chuck’s better.)
