Penn’s Store

My friend Jack Wise directed me to Penn’s Store located in Gravel Switch, Kentucky. I learned that Penn’s Store is the oldest general store still owned and operated by the same family since 1845.* They also have an active Facebook page which includes these photos of the Store and some classic cars (click here.)

(Note to John Carbone – now we know where your car ended up?)

The following photo shows current Penn’s owner Dawn in the rumble seat. (Dawn is also featured in the video below.)

I found the follow description of Penn’s in an article titled “Ten Charming General Stores in Kentucky.”

As for Penn’s yearly Outhouse Races, check out this video. (Note, that while I can appreciate and relate to having some classic cars around, I am not too sure about hosting any Outhouse Races at Buzzy’s anytime soon!)

Didn’t see any booze being poured in Penn’s. However, if forced to choose between selling some alcohol and messing with outhouses, think I’ll stick with door Number 1.

And speaking of bars check this out:

*For the record, Buzzy’s has been around since 1875 and has been operated by two families – the Shumans and then my family who took it over from them in 1945.
