Twofer Tuesday – Amos and Andy Baltimore Style

Years ago Pam had to undergo a six hour back surgery at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma and Medical Center in Baltimore. While she was in the OR getting operated on, I strolled down the street a couple of blocks from the Center to grab something to eat at the Lexington Market.

In the Market’s food court area, I sat at a table adjacent an older black gentleman who had a friend recognize and approach him. Their conversation sounded like something out of an old Amos and Andy show. (I know that that reference dates me, so, for you younger guys and gals, let’s go with “Sounded like something out of a Spike Lee movie”.) Their conversation went something as follows. (Nothing racist intended here, I dubbed the friends Amos and Andy to differentiate who is speaking.)

Amos: “Hey man, how you doin’? I ain’t seen you in forever.

Andy: “I am not bad for an old man, now that I gots my sugar taken care of. That diabetes is some bad shit. How’s bout you? How you been?”

Amos: “I’m doing ok ‘cept for these two brothers Arthur and Ritis who keep kicking my ass. Some days I can’t hardly move.”

Andy: “I know what you mean but I found something to hold ’em off of me. WD- 40.”

Amos: “What you say? WD-40?”

Andy: “Yeah man. Remember that hair cream commercial – a little dab will do you? I just sprays a little WD-40 on where I aches and it does the trick for me. Ain’t no Michael Jordan mind you, but I can do what I wanna do and go where I wanna go. That WD-40 is the real deal, bro.”

Amos: “Man, you done told me something. I’m gonna have to check that shit out.”

I thought of that exchange just now when one of those MSN popups scrolled across the PC screen:

Sure enough, one of the six areas was your body:

Wonder how Amos and Andy ever made out with their WD-40 experiences.

Here is a medical-related Amos and Andy clip that even mentions a medical school in Baltimore:

As for some music, here is the theme song and a great scene from Spike’s Mo’ Better Blues. Denzel and Wesley do a nice acting job here, but it’s really Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard playing this song and all of the music that they composed for the movie.
