Yesterday I thought about passing along a Ukrainian-related joke having to do with the Crimea River. Something along the lines “What did Putin say when Zalensky complained to him about being invaded?” Guess you can see why I passed on passing it along.
However, it did motivate me to do a little exploring as to the origins of the song “Cry Me a River” which I always thought of as a Joe Cocker tune.
I learned however, that Joe’s version was a remake of the original written in 1952 by Arthur Hamiliton. And yes, Arthur did have some concerns that his song might be confused with the Crimea River. This is from the folks at Wiki:

Upon further review, I learned that Hamilton wrote the song for jazz singer Peggy King who wanted to record it but Mitch Miller, the head of Columbia Records, said no.

Soooo, just because I was fairly certain that I had never heard Joe sing “plebian” in his version of the song, I went back and re-listened to it. What do you know – he does so twice (@ 1:05 and 2:04 if you want to hear for yourself.)
And speaking of crying a river, even though there is no crying in baseball, the Orioles made me do so last night after tying the game in the bottom of the ninth inning only to lose it in the 10th (click here for story.) In the 9th inning, they stranded the winning run on third base with their numbers 2, 3 and 4 batters at the plate and were unable to drive in the winning run. All I can say is that it was way beyond being “plebeian.” (Since it is Sunday I’ll omit all of the curse word adjectives that come to mind.) As Joe sang though “it nearly drove me outta my head.”
But that was yesterday and today’s 1:30 game will be on at Buzzy’s. It is the O’s final regular season home game and yes, we will drink when they win. Heck, we’ll even drink if they lose, so it really doesn’t matter does it?!
