Pluto and Saints No More

Searching for info on the upcoming planet alignment, I was a little surprised to learn that Pluto has been demoted and is no longer considered to be a planet (click here.) (Note this means that the mnemonic for previously remembering the 9 planets in order “My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas” has now been reduced to 8 words with Moma now simply serving us Nachos.) Pluto is still around only it is now considered to be a “Dwarf Planet.”

Today being Sunday, let’s stay with this demotion theme and look at something else that has always puzzled me: when is a Saint no longer a Saint? The answer is “When the Catholic Church says they ain’t.”

In 1969, the Church removed 90 some folks including St. Christopher from their liturgical calendars (click here.) Here is an attempt at explaining why such action was taken:

Not sure that that explains much as some biggies of “universal significance” such as Christopher, Nicklaus (yes Santa Claus!) and George were all booted out of the Saints’ Club. But who knows, maybe they’ll make a come back someday. That seems to be the current trend.

However, let’s forget all that Pluto/Saints Begone intrigue and talk about matters that really matter – football!

Yesterday, in Buzzy’s Country Store I had Commanders’ fans trundling in wearing their colors, excited and looking forward to the later playoff game. It was good to see all that burgundy and gold being worn again.

As I laughed and joked with them however, the thought crossed my mind “Geez, I sure hope these guys are as happy after the game as they are now.”

Well, I need not have worried because the Commanders took care of business and beat the powerful Lions 45-31. Recall that they were big underdogs and yet managed to manhandle the Lions by laying a 14point margin of defeat on them.

That means the Commanders will be competing next week in the NFC Championship game. For the record, their last trip there was in 91. Been a long time. Calls for some music.

Great Friday night show at the Rex from Lez Zeppelin. I caught a snippet of it here:

And now the full version from Zepp themselves 51 years ago – talk about a long time:
