I was driving down to Buzzy’s Country Store listening to the Vinnie and Haynie Radio show yesterday as they interviewed U of Md’s Walt Williams. (Walt played several years in the NBA, and is currently a radio announcer for Maryland men’s basketball.)
Somewhere in the interview, Haynie mentioned Walt having appeared in the Hootie video Only Wanna Be With You. I tracked it down and sure enough Walt appears wearing his Kings’ uniform number 12 – in the opening scene no less and later at 00:32 holding his nose as Dan Patrick comments “These Blowfish stink.”
Wiki had this to say about the music video:
As for the Maryland connection, Hootie members Don Felbar and Mark Bryan were both originally from Gaithersburg.
In the song “Only Wanna Be With You,” there are a couple Dylan references which I picked up on right away when I first heard the tune (click here.) What I missed however, and did not realize until just now, is that the line “I’m such a baby because the dolphins make me cry” was about the football Dolphins.

And for all these years, I thought the reference was about Flipper-kind-of-dolphins and not football/Dan Marino Dolphins. Accordingly, I have always regarded it a sappy and stupid line as in – who the hell cries over dolphins? Like Earl said “It’s what you learn after you know it all that matters.” Crying over sports teams losing is something I am very familiar with doing. Too much so actually.
“Only Wanna Be With You” was released in the 90’s. Bringing you a little more up to date, music wise at least, check out this one I recently heard on Netflix’s Loudermilk series. Very funny show (sample below) with a lot of great music (even if I haven’t heard any Hootie played on it yet.)
