This was an advertisement for the re-election campaign of The Raley Ticket that had won in 1962. My Dad Buzzy was part of that team and served when there were only 3 County Commissioners along with Elliot Burch and Wilmer Bowles.

Unfortunately, both J. Frank and Buzzy were defeated in that Primary election by the Dorsey machine. Walter beat J. Frank and George Aud won over Buzzy. One of the issues at the time was the recent outlawing of slot machines which J. Frank had spearheaded. Walter ran on a promise to bring slot machines back. As we know, that never happened. (Note that after Walter defeated J. Frank in the Primary, Republican Paul Bailey defeated Walter in the General election.)

Here was Buzzy’s subsequent concession letter to the Enterprise. Note his way of saying that he enjoyed serving on the Board with Elliot, but not so much with Wilmer.)

P.S. For an interesting take on the choice between J. Frank and Walter, read the Enterprise’s front page editorial in the same edition as the above ad. (Article is on top left side above the fold. While Walter is not mentioned by name, any comparisons you care to make with our current national situation by substituting the name of someone else for Walter is up to you. Signed “Still waiting for Mexico to pay for that wall.”)

I knew a guy in the Army named Roosevelt “Poor Boy” Wansley who was quite a character. He was also a big Johnnie Taylor fan and I always think of Poor Boy whenever I see or hear anything about Johnnie. “Who’s Making Love” was Johnnie’s biggest hit. However, since I am thinking Army days here, this marching refrain inspired by Johnnie’s lyrics (“Ain’t no sense in going home, Jody’s got your Girl and gone”) comes to mind.
