Sets of Two For the Long Winding Road

Today’s Twofer Tuesday involves sets of two old farts as follows:

Celebrating Pat Guy’s 75th birthday this past Saturday, he and I were commiserating with and congratulating each other on having reached that milestone. As we commented about being the oldest farts in Buzzy’s, Gary Milburn and Wayne Bailey rolled in. Gary and Wayne have a few years on Pat and me. Thus, Pat and I were no longer the two oldest guys at the bar.

On Friday, for his first post-Triple-Bypass-Surgery road trip, my friend Charlie Harless escorted his two out of town guests and long time buddies Ray and Dan on a South County tour. Of course they made a stop in Buzzy’s where Kim Wiley took the following photo:

It made me dig out an old t shirt:

I watched the new Paul McCartney documentary “Man on the Run” last night and it was pretty good. Focusing on his time immediately after the Beatles breakup and the start up of his new band Wings, the film does a nice job explaining and showing how Paul made that transition and continued to make some great music. The following tune was a 1973 Wings production. The first verse always comes to my mind whenever I think about getting older:

When you were young and your heart
was an open book, You used to say live and let live.
But if* this ever changing world In which we’re living
Makes you give in and cry, say live and let die.

Live and Let Die was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song but lost to Barbra’s “The Way We Were.” In 2012 the two of them collaborated on a tune that Paul wrote. Babs turns 84 in April of this year with Paul doing so in June.

*If you questioned whether the correct lyric was “if” or “in” click here and scroll down for an extended grammar discussion on the subject. Then again, I recall someone saying – if you have a grammar problem with any rock lyrics, you are too OCD and probably should not be listening to them! (That said, I still always have to pause a bit whenever I hear America sing “Ain’t no one for to give you no pain” from their classic Horse With No Name. Then again, it’s only rock n roll but I like it!)
