The U.S. Botanic Garden in D.C. has an exhibit thru October 16th featuring State and Territories’ Flowers. For a good article discussing the exhibit and a list of official State/Territories’ flowers (click here.)
Couple observations:
Maryland’s State flower is the Black Eyed Susan and I’m good with that. However, I am also a little partial to all those nice sunflowers that we have growing around us. Note that Kansas has the sunflower as their State flower. If you think about it however, our Susan is just a petite version of the sunflower.
Wyoming has as their State flower what they refer to as an Indian paintbrush. I am not trying to go too woke on you, but shouldn’t that be a Native American paintbrush?
But the most unusual State flower belongs to the folks of Maine who have the pine cone. I never thought of a pine cone as a flower. But then again, I never gave it much thought either. Another puzzler is Oregon with the grape as their official flower. Pine cones and grapes make this list but no daisy to be found.
I counted five roses listed as a State’s official flower. New York, Iowa, South Dakota and D.C. all have a rose variation as their official flower. The fifth entry is from my birth state Oklahoma with – what else their Oklahoma Rose:

For the record, Buzzy’s Country Store official flower would be Four Roses. Get it?
