From the weird associations’ file, the St. Michaels’ Fall Festival always reminds me of Kennedy’s assassination. Kennedy was shot in 1963 on the Friday before that year’s Fall Festival scheduled for that Sunday. My Mom tells me that following Kennedy’s death, they had held a meeting to discuss possibly postponing the festival. However, because all of the food had been purchased for the event, and everything else was set to go, they elected to have the festival anyway.
I remember being at the Festival that year and running into Joe Drury who said that he was glad that they had decided to have the Festival because he was tired of watching nothing but assassination-related stuff on T-V. (Remember, this was back in the day when we only received 4 channels – 4, 5, 7 and 9. Jack Ruby had shot Oswald earlier that Sunday morning and everyone at the Festival was buzzing about it.) I think Joe’s sentiment was pretty much shared by everyone at the time. I remember Mom telling me that it was one of their more successful festivals. Ride down to today’s festival, and then swing by a Country Store where the conversation will definitely not be about Kennedy’s assassination.
