Couple months back when plans for our 45th Ryken High School reunion were first set for 4 October, my wife Pam noted “You can tell no Jews were on the planning committee because that’s Yom Kippur.”
There is the story about the young man who asked the Rabbi what he should do because a World Series baseball game coincided with Yom Kippur. The Rabbi told the young man to DVR it. The young man was confused as he asked the Rabbi “You mean you can DVR Yom Kippur?”
Reminded me of Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax not pitching in a World Series game because it was on Yom Kippur. Turns out that the owners of the Nationals are also observing it today and will not be attending the Nats-Giants game (click here.) Leads me to wonder if any Jews were on the MLB Playoff Planning Committee.
Music-wise there are number of tunes to guide one thru the observance of Yom Kippur. Check out this playlist that includes some surprises such as Losing My Religion (click here.) I like the song but always trip over the “Think that I thought” lyric as being a little too-too.
That said however, it does make me stop and think about it and maybe that’s what Yom Kippur is all about anyway. If you want to do some reflecting and atoning today, I will have a cold beer ready for you at Buzzy’s to help out. Shalom.
