Academy Awards tonite and according to most of the prognosticators Best Movie is a toss up between Birdman and Boyhood. For my money it should be Birdman but keep in mind I’m always 180 on these sorts of things. (Still think Pulp Fiction should have won over Forest Gump.)
However, I did see the movie Boyhood the other day and while it is nominated for 6 Academy Awards, it made me wonder while watching it “What am I missing here?” It’s very slow and boring and the kid got on my nerves. Remember too, I hate kid actors so the young Mason didn’t impress me much. However, as he got older he impressed me even less, the whiny little twit that he became.
Concede that Patricia Arquette as the Mom was good and deserves her Best Actress nomination. But for me Ethan Hawke, as the kid’s Dad, was equally as good and yet he’s not getting any recognition. Seemed to me that the Dad’s story and his maturation over the 12 years was much more interesting than the kid’s was. Maybe that’s because I related more to/with dad. Worth seeing but wait for it on cable/Netflix.
