Gone to the Byrds (and Ponies)

Someone who pays very close, maybe too much attention to what I post here on the Buzzyblog asked me what happened to the Byrds in my CD collection.  (My post on having three or more CDs of an artist, mentioned Bruce and Chris Isaak lined up in alphabetical order.  My eagle eyed (get that bird pun?) critic asked me why I did not have the Byrds in my 3-or-more-collection.)

Answer has to do with another musical idiosynchronicity of mine in that for the longest of times I refused to re-buy anything that I already owned in another format.  For instance if I had all of the Beatles albums, which I do, on vinyl I simply refused to re-buy them on tape or CD.  Because the Byrds were on the Columbia Record label, I owned all of their stuff thru the record club (remember the come-on of 12 records for a penny deal?) but never re-purchased anything of theirs on tape or CD.  Thus, I don’t own anything of the Byrds on CDs.

But having said that, the Byrds had several truly great songs with my favorite being their cover of Dylan’s My Back Pages.  (It’s close though because Eight Miles High always took me to another place too.)     However, here is a lesser known tune of theirs Chestnut Mare that I always liked too (click here.)  (I never knew that it was composed as part of  a musical play that for some reason never got produced.)

On a related note, guess by now you’ve seen the David Crosby news about hitting a jogger (click here.)  Just wanted to include that little tidbit of gossip as a footnote here to point out the old news axiom “if it bleeds it gets mentioned at the end.”  (Sarcasm font needed.)
