Here’s another country store/restaurant that probably won’t fare as well long term as did Coolidge’s Cilley Store (previous post) – Ruke’s on Smith Island. It is now closed and it doesn’t sound like there are any plans to try and keep it going (click here.) Always makes me a little sad when I see stories like this about an old business shutting down. The grill went cold last month. The Store, now known as Ruke’s Seafood Deck, named for Dize’s husband, Ruthman “Ruke” Dize, closed permanently after nearly a century as a business in the island village of Ewell.
Locals and visitors have lost a landmark and a piece of island lore.
