Ruke’s Smith Island – Closed

Here’s another country store/restaurant that probably won’t fare as well long term as did Coolidge’s Cilley Store (previous post) – Ruke’s on Smith Island.  It is now closed and it doesn’t sound like there are any plans to try and keep it going (click here.)  Always makes me a little sad when I see stories like this about an old business shutting down.  Excerpts from linked article follow:
 
The grill went cold last month. The Store, now known as Ruke’s Seafood Deck, named for Dize’s husband, Ruthman “Ruke” Dize, closed permanently after nearly a century as a business in the island village of Ewell.
Locals and visitors have lost a landmark and a piece of island lore.
