Buzzy Rig

I am thinking about re-doing the fenced in side area of the Store where the trash cans are stored.  Both the gate and the fence are falling apart and need replacing.

The gate is, or make that was, attached to the walnut tree with a hinge that had been scabbed into the tree.  While it did not appear to harm the tree, it is what I call a classic Buzzy Rig (as opposed to a more racist reference.)  I believe that “jerry rig” is probably the more recognizable and accepted term.

But, it did get me wondering about the term to “jerry rig” something. Turns out that it came from WW2 era and the Germans, who were referred to as Jerries by U.S. soldiers.  Whenever the Germans evacuated an area, and U.S. troops  discovered some hastily repaired item, it was referred to as having been Jerry-rigged (click here.) There is also a sailing term  “Jury Rig” which was used when the main mast broke or needed repairs (click here.) So, you have your pick of terms.  I’ve even heard someone say that he “MacGyvered” it.  If you don’t get that reference (click here.)

On the matter of fixing things, here’s the Beatles take on it although I believe that they were talking about shooting up drugs vs. actually repairing anything.
