I missed commenting on the anniversary of Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig’s record of consecutive games played on 6 September 1995. A lifelong Orioles’ fan, I was glad of course to have seen Cal break and set a record back then that will probably never be broken. (Remember though to never say never.) Here is a short video of that night.
But, at the risk of being struck down by the baseball gods, there is a small part of me, the Ridge-boy wise ass part, that doesn’t really regard Cal breaking Lou’s record as that big a deal. I concede that it was a great accomplishment and that Cal was always a class act, but it was not THAT big a deal. Hey, he showed up to play. How hard was that? If I weren’t such a big Orioles’ fan and say that Cal played on another team like the Yankees, I’d probably feel a little like this guy here who does not hold Cal nor his record in such high esteem (click here.)
I know, I know I shouldn’t be bad mouthing Cal and yeah I’m a just a little ashamed for doing so. Apologies rendered. I guess then I’m a little like Cedric the Entertainer in the movie Barbershop where he was critical of Rosa Parks:
I debated including this song but figured what the hell, having disparaged Cal, Rosa Parks and Jesse Jackson all in the same post, why not offend everyone while I’m at it:
