Kickoff weekend for college football and I don’t care. I have never been a big college football fan mostly because I’ve never really had a decent team to root for. University of Maryland football has been so mediocre for so long that it’s been tough to get behind and root for them. As for our neighboring West Virginia, Penn State, Virginia Tech football teams, I don’t really care much about any of them. Only local team I have a passing interest in is Navy.
None of the nationally ranked big boy schools makes me want to root for any of them either. (It is true that I once banned someone from Buzzy’s Country Store and one of the reasons I did so is because all he wanted to talk about was Notre Dame football and how great it is. His second favorite sports team to talk about ad nausea was the New York Yankees. Quite simply then, he had to go, as I just couldn’t take any more.)
But back to college football and another reason that I think it’s all screwed up, Nick Saban, coach at Alabama makes $7.5 million a year same as the NFL’s leading coach Bill Belichick of the Patriots. College players who play for Saban get a scholarship worth about $20K a year and that’s it. Something doesn’t seem right about all this does it? Here’s a look at the highest paid state employees across the U.S. and you will see “Football Coach” a lot:

Regarding the above chart, I’m glad to see that at least Nevada has its priorities straight. (For those of you who have trouble locating the states out west, Nevada is the one with a “V” as in NeVada for its border.)
And yet there is one thing I do like about college football. It has to do with the mascots whom Brad Paisley does a nice job paying tribute to here:
