The flail about us bombing that hospital in Afghanistan (click here) reminded me of the following:
When Buzzy and I toured South Africa we met a couple of British ladies named Mollie and Joy. Mollie was a widow and Joy’s husband did not care to travel so the two of them signed on for the South Africa Tour. Both of them were retired nurses and had done a lot of travelling so it was always time well spent in talking to and getting to know them.
One night at dinner they got to talking about their experiences when they were children and the Nazis bombed England every night (click here.) Joy told how her folks had a bunker behind their house and that they would retreat to it every evening after dinner to stay there thru the night. Mollie said that her family could not afford a bunker so they would all sleep under their dining room table as the bombs fell about them. Molly laughed as she noted that no one ever mentioned that if a bomb hit directly on their house, the dining room table wasn’t going to be enough to save them but at least they felt a little safer hiding out under there. When I asked how long this went on they noted that it was about 7 months. When I asked how they managed to live like that, they both responded along the lines with “We never much thought about it because it was just something that you did.” Check out this excerpt:
