Brackets and Bedtimes

Prior to the start of last week’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, I submitted my bracket picks on ESPN’s website where they allow you up to 10 inputs.  I submitted several brackets and did variations of heart (Maryland all the way) and head (Kansas wins it all) selections.

Then, just for the hell of it, I did a Buzzy Bracket where I asked folks in Buzzy’s Country Store who they liked in certain games.  Most of the folks I asked would beg off with “I don’t know anything about college basketball.”  I told them to pick a team anyway.

So guess which of my 10 bracket contest submissions is my second best performer?  Yep, my Buzzy picks are right up there in the 81% group (left.)  (Thank you Jennifer for the Syracuse pick.)

My “heart” pick, Jridge1, with Maryland winning it all, is up there too at 81%.  However, I got a bad feeling that that one bites the dust tonite when Maryland, is a 7 point underdog to Kansas the heavy favorite to win it all.

(Old guy note:  you know that you have become a genuine old fart when you see a ballgame’s start time set for 9:40 p.m. and your first reaction is to be pissed that it’s starting so late!  I may have to make a pot of coffee just to stay up and watch it!  The other bad thing about late night games occurs when the team you are pulling for loses.  Afterwards, not only do you feel bad about the loss, but also you regret having lost all that sleep just to watch ’em lose!)

One last note on my picks.  Below you’ll see that my Jridge8 entry is in the 87th percentile of all entries.  Not bad right?  In the overall ESPN rankings however, I am at # 1,625,327 of all the brackets submitted.  That will keep you humble.

Speaking of bites the dust, Stallone originally wanted that tune as his theme song for his movie Rocky, but Queen wouldn’t let him use it.  Bet they regret turning down the Charlotte Hall Academy dude (click here.)  Now that I think about it, wasn’t Rocky a big underdog too?
