Terrapins Looking Back

University of Maryland will celebrate the 20th year anniversary of Terps winning the National Title in 2002 today by bringing back players and their Coach Gary Williams from that team (click here for story.)

Very nice gesture and it will certainly rekindle lots of good memories of how great that team composed of Lonnie Baxter, Steve Blake, Juan Dixon, Byron Mouton and Chris Wilcox was.  They went to the Final Four in 2001 and then not only repeated that in 2002 but won it all.

However, on the down side of things, while it is great to look back to the glory days of Maryland basketball, doing so also points out just how far the current team has fallen.   They are currently 13-14 and ranked 12th in the Big 10 Conference which has 14 teams. It makes thinking back to the glory days a little bit of a head shaking endeavor as to how bad things are today in Terrapinville.

The 4 p.m. game between Ohio State and the Terps will be on at Buzzy’s Country Store, but I don’t know how much of the half time ceremony honoring the 2002 guys will be shown.  Plus, Ohio State who is ranked 22nd in the Nation figures to put an ass whippin on the Terps who have been inconsistent all season.  Maybe Juan and company can inspire the boys to at least make a game of it.

Ah but there was time back in 2002 when Fear the Turtle was for real.  Check this out:
