For those of you who have resolved to do more exercise commencing with this, the New Year, check out this very simple one that will only consume a couple minutes of your time each day. I stumbled, literally as it turns out, upon it in a Washington Post article titled “Are You Fit For Your Age?“ (Because WaPo has their paywall you may not be able to access the entire article.) However, here is the 25 words or less explanation of it.
See how long you can stand on one leg while counting the seconds before you need to put your other leg down. The WaPo article included a sliding scale that rates you based on how long you managed to stay up on one leg.
While I did ok standing on my left leg, I couldn’t get past 10 seconds trying to stand on my right leg. (This is the side where I broke my hip several years ago.)

The ensuing exercise prescribed in the WaPo article then is to try and stand a little longer each time you do this drill. In the week or so that I have been doing this, I have actually managed to triple the amount of time I can now stay up on my right leg. I know, that’s only 30 seconds but hey it’s a start. And for all you smart asses out there, please, no jokes about me trying to stay up longer. (As for you politicos, no teasing that I favor the left even when standing on one leg!)
From their album “A Question of Balance” here then are the Moodies with two songs rolled into one.
Last complete slate of games today for football Sundays this season before the playoffs commence. Got ’em on at Buzzy’s Country Store for you so drop in if out and about. For an added challenge to the above exercise, try drinking on one leg and see how long you can do so!
