The future, the past and the present walked into a bar. Things got a little tense.
Topic of conversation in Buzzy’s Country Store will often involve time as in there is not enough of it to do what one wants or needs to do and it goes by so quickly. Occassionally, I will note that this as an example of good problems versus bad problems in that being busy and having a full dance card is usually a good problem to have. It means that you are still getting it done.
Conversely however, another, recent Buzzy time management conversation had to do with someone who had just retired and now finds that he has too much time on his hands. He even admitted “I don’t know what to do with myself.”
I started to give him my “Life is a matter of time, health and money, and should you ever find yourself with enough of all three simultaneously, you better take advantage of it while you can because it is not going to last” spiel. However, I kept my advice ammo dry and just listened as my friend continued discussing his post-retirement plans and possibilities.
Later, on my way home from the Store, I thought some more about that conversation. It made me realize and recognize that I never did have the luxury nor the necessity (depending on how you look at it,) of trying to figure out my post-retirement plans because it all just sorta happened. One day I was working for the Navy; the next day I was behind the counter at Buzzy’s.
In 2007 I parachuted from the Navy Base directly into Buzzy’s and have never looked back. I do have to admit however, there are times when I do shake my head and marvel that it has been a very quick 17 years. It does make me wonder – Where does the time go?)
Stones performed at the New Orleans Jazz Fest Thursday (click here) and it was a nice gesture on their part to give Irma Thomas some recognition and respect by having her join them as they did Time is On My Side.
It was Irma’s 1964 version of the song that the Stones heard and liked enough to record and release as one of their first hit tunes. (Mick even copied Irma’s mid-song ad libs (2:00 mark in the video) “like I told you so many times before.”) With Irma at 83, and Mick and Keith in their 80’s, time may or may not really be on their side, but it sure has been good to all of them! (Watch how Mick defers to Irma and gives her the spotlight here.)
