Karen’s Calendar 2025

For several years now Karen Guy of Guy Distributing has produced a great calendar featuring County bars and stores of yesteryear. (Buzzy’s was featured in 2020 (click here.)) I have saved all of the previous year’s editions of Karen’s Calendar and enjoy periodically going back and looking thru the many business that once dotted our landscape. Sad to say, the majority of them are no longer around.

This year’s edition came to me courtesy of my new Guy Distributing Sales Rep Iris Roberts. Thank you Iris!

Since it is a Twofer Tuesday, here are the first two months’ photos.

January portrays a photo of Scotland’s Rosie Hewlett’s Bar:

I have featured Rosie and her store previously here on the Buzzyblog (click here). In addition, if you (click here) on Massey’s “You Know You’re From St. Mary’s” FB page and scroll down, you will see more info, including several interior photos of Rosie’s place of business. The building still stands and is owned by Rosie’s nephew, my friend Julian Bryant.

Up next, Karen’s February calendar photo features White Point Tavern which was located in Medley’s Neck.

I found these comments and memories of White Point on Massey’s “You Know You’re From St. Mary’s” FB page (click here.)

Still looking for a photo of White Point Tavern.

I was in an Allman Brothers mood the other day and when the following tune played, I caught myself thinking “Damn that’s a great song.” Initially written and recorded by Warren Haynes, Soulshine was a nickname given to Warren by his Dad. Hence the song’s references to “My daddy said.” The Allman Brothers made it popular as one of their go-to songs. Check out this performance from them where Gregg turns the second verse over to Warren (1:35.) Stay for the guitar solos from Warren and Derek Trucks (5:00.) Wouldn’t you agree that we need a whole lot more Soulshine now more than ever? It’s damn sure better than rain!
