August 2025

August already!

Here is some useless trivia for you.

August initially was named Sextilis which is Latin for sixth. In their original calendar, the Romans had it as the sixth month because their ten month year started in March.

However, in 8 B.C. the calendar was revised with the addition of two months January and February. Thus, August became the eight month and was renamed after Augustus Caesar. His Granduncle Julius had already switched the month originally named Quintilis, (Latin for fifth) to July so Augustus wanted to keep up. The month named September originated from Septem which is Latin for seventh. Guess no other egotistical emperor wanted the month of September as a namesake. Makes you wonder if renaming it Trumpus can’t be that far off!

We have a very busy month of August events in the extended Buzzy family, Karen Leach, Rita Weaver, Cousin Johnny (JW) Raley, CJ Little and Ted Yeatman all celebrate their birthdays this coming Sunday. Bobbi Jo Magee is on 5 Aug; my Grandson Stone Ridgell turns 6 on the 8th; Peggy Binzel the 15th; Lorie Raley the 17th; Cathy Wright the 20th; Gary Wood the 25th, my son Brady also on the 25th and Brother-in-law Dan Hofmeister on the 26th. Wedding anniversaries are celebrated by my in-laws Stella and Sol Aroesty on the 8th; Marylou and Jimmy Cullison celebrate theirs on the 29th.

Just now when I went to my 1 August 2024 blog post to do this year’s cut and paste, I saw that 1 August was Dickie Cullison’s birthday and that he would have been 75 today. Here’s to you my life long friend. We’ll toast one in your memory at Buzzy’s later today. The following is from Mary Garland’s photo album (click here.)

All of this “Tilis” talk above made me think of Mel:

Only one song can follow that and with just maybe the best opening rock lyric ever:

It always reminds me of the opening scene in The Big Chill (click here.) Some jokers have stated that this was Kevin Costner’s best role. (If you don’t get that, he is the corpse in the opening scene.)
